Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Ipswich is an increasingly diverse and multicultural Borough. The Council recognises and values the diversity of our community and workforce, and is committed to meeting the needs of our residents and our employees.

Our new Corporate Strategy, Proud of Ipswich, sets out our ambition to champion our community and revitalise our town.

To achieve our ambition, we will have a skilled, empowered and customer-centred workforce drawn from, and reflective, of the community we serve.

Here you can find out more about what Ipswich Borough Council is doing to eliminate discrimination and promote equality within the organisation and across the borough.

  • At Ipswich Borough Council, as a Disability Confident Employer, we are committed to providing an open environment where disabled people are included and valued.

  • The Council wants to ensure that all employees feel able to be their true selves at work. Our commitment includes EDI training, trans ally training, the beginnings of an LGBTQ+ staff network, and inclusive employment policies.

  • We were the first Suffolk council to be accredited as a Living Wage Employer and in 2024 will celebrate ten years’ commitment to ensuring people get a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work - something we know not only helps employees (of both the Council and our trading companies) and their families, but the town and the local economy.

  • Over the last few years we have trained an ever growing number of colleagues – from all areas of the organisation – to become Mental Health First Aiders. Our trained colleagues offer employees immediate support and if required signpost employees to specialist services.

  • Ipswich Borough Council supports the Suffolk Armed Forces Community Covenant, a mechanism for the community to support the military community and to develop opportunities for shared benefit.

  • The REACH (Race, Equality and Cultural Heritage) is a Staff Network supporting the Council’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivity and providing a safe, supportive and confidential forum for sharing experiences, networking and discussing issues that affect employees from multi-cultural groups.

The Borough complies with its obligations under the Equality Act 2010, including the specific duties it has under the Public Sector Equality Duty, to eliminate unlawful discrimination; advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
